Biden Protects China’s Unfair Trade Practices

Top news right now: President Joe Biden has vetoed a bipartisan measure that would have reinstated tariffs on solar products from Southeast Asian countries. The move follows the discovery of Chinese companies using these nations to circumvent trade rules. Republicans and some Democrats had called for the tariffs, arguing China needed to be held accountable for breaking U.S. trade laws and human rights abuses. However, the solar industry, and a group of Democrats in the Senate, supported Biden’s decision, citing the central role of solar energy in his carbon-free electricity sector plan. The two-year moratorium on penalties against solar cells and modules exported from Cambodia, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam will remain in place until June 2024.
