In this video, we will teach you how to know if your food is really organic.
Products ranging from T-shirts to garden soil to soap are often marketed as “organic.”
The word (and the process) has become so popular that many cities even have organic dry cleaners.
With this common usage, it’s questionable when products are truly organic and how consumers can tell the difference.
In the United States, organic can be defined differently depending on the product. The U.S. Department of Agriculture certifies whether or not food is organic, but non-food products aren’t as strictly regulated.
Foods that meet USDA organic standards are called “certified organic,” sometimes “USDA certified organic.”
Organic foods in the United States can be labeled as such if the following conditions are met:
The product bears the official USDA organic seal.
The product has been certified organic.
The product contains 95 percent or more organic ingredients.
The official USDA organic seal is green and white, and some manufacturers and producers use a very similar, though different colored, seal.
If you want to know if the fruits and vegetables you’re buying are truly organic, look at the price sticker (PLU). If it’s organic, the code contains five digits beginning with the number 9.
Organic produce may be cheaper at farmers markets because shipping costs are lower and there are no middlemen, but it can be difficult to figure out what you’re getting – especially if the produce doesn’t have a PLU sticker.
It’s also common for some popular retailers to set their own standards for what they can sell with an organic label.
