Tory MPs have voted to stop the former Cabinet minister, Owen Paterson, being suspended from the House of Commons despite an ‘egregious’ breach of lobbying rules.
Mr Paterson was facing a 30-day suspension for breaching lobbying rules for two companies, both of which paid him more then £100,000.
But Conservative colleagues backed an amendment which will instead see a new committee set up to examine the standards system and take another look at the case against him.
The current Committee on Standards is made up of cross-party MPs with no single one in majority, but could now be replaced by a Conservative-led one.
