How to Check If Your Turmeric is Real or Fake at Home

Turmeric is an indispensable spice in Indian cuisine.

Not only is it used as a spice, but it’s also revered as an Ayurvedic remedy for strengthening the immune system, healing wounds, and as a natural anti-inflammatory.

There are two common ways to adulterate turmeric.

One is by adding fillers, which aren’t toxic substances but ingredients with no nutritional value, such as daw dust, rice flour, chalk powder or starch.

In some cases, synthetic colorants are used to make the product appear bright and yellow along with the fillers.

These include chemicals such as yellow metanilic dye and lead chromate, which are the most commonly used.

They can be toxic and have a negative impact on your health, especially if consumed regularly hidden in your turmeric powder.

Given their daily use and impact on our health, it’s important that you buy the best quality turmeric.

It can be difficult to tell real turmeric from fake just by looking at it.

If you’re unsure, here’s an easy way to check if the turmeric you’re about to use is pure or has been laced with any adulterants.
