Do you know why the thyroid is important to our body?

The thyroid is a gland located in the front of the neck and plays a key role in regulating the metabolism and balancing the body. It is related to the good functioning of the heart, brain, liver, and kidney.

Besides, the thyroid also affects growth, menstrual cycle, fertility, weight, and even your emotional state.

These effects happen because the thyroid releases the hormones T3 and T4 in blood flow, which then takes them through all of the body.

The thyroid is controlled by the pituitary gland, controlled by an area of the brain called the hypothalamus.

An alteration in any of these areas can cause symptoms and issues related to the thyroid.

Thyroid cancer is a type of tumor that has a cure in most cases, especially when the treatment starts early on.

It is important to stay alert to any symptoms that can suggest the development of thyroid cancer.

Although this type of cancer is more common around 45 years old, it is best to talk to an endocrinologist or head-and-neck doctor whenever you notice any of these symptoms.

They will request exams to identify any issues with your thyroid and start adequate treatment.

However, these symptoms can also indicate other less serious issues, like gastroesophageal reflux, respiratory infections, or problems in the vocal cords.

Cysts or nodes in the thyroid can also have the same symptoms, but they are usually benign and don’t pose any dangers to the health.

These things should be investigated since, in most cases, thyroid cancer doesn’t cause any symptoms.

Pay attention and remember to maintain a healthy diet, avoid excess weight, exercise regularly, and avoid smoking and exaggerated alcohol consumption.
